Araghchi: Iran and US reach a better understanding during Muscat negotiations

Iran and the US have held periodic negotiations to address nuclear and sanctions-related disputes, particularly after Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal. Talks have often faced challenges due to differing approaches and external geopolitical pressures.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran and the United States have reached a “better understanding” of each other’s positions, with their stance becoming somewhat closer.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Araghchi stated that the latest round of negotiations between Iran and the US in Muscat, Oman, was more serious and direct than previous discussions. He emphasized that both sides moved away from general topics and focused on more detailed issues.

While acknowledging the increasing complexity of the talks, Araghchi stressed that negotiations are progressing. He explained that both delegations have demonstrated commitment to finding solutions despite the challenges.

The fourth round of discussions was led by Araghchi and Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s regional envoy, with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi acting as mediator.

These talks mark the highest-level engagement between Tehran and Washington since the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018 and reinstated economic sanctions on Iran. The discussions initially began on April 12 and have continued in pursuit of common ground.

Araghchi reaffirmed that both sides are determined to continue negotiations, with plans for another round of talks. However, the timing and location will be determined based on the schedules of both parties. He noted that the Omani foreign minister plays a crucial role in facilitating these arrangements.

During the discussions, Iran warned that contradictory remarks by American officials hinder progress and should be revised. Araghchi emphasized that Iran maintains a consistent and precise stance, avoiding contradictory statements, and expects the US to adopt a similar approach.

The Iranian foreign minister underscored that lifting sanctions and Iran’s right to uranium enrichment remain central to the negotiations. He asserted that enrichment must continue without compromise, though aspects such as scale and level could be adjusted for confidence-building measures.

Similarly, Araghchi stressed that Iran’s negotiating position primarily revolves around the removal of sanctions. He reiterated that sanctions relief is a fundamental pillar of Iran’s diplomatic strategy.

Before departing for Oman, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s stance, describing uranium enrichment as a “non-negotiable” right. He highlighted the significant sacrifices made by Iranian nuclear scientists in developing the country’s nuclear capabilities, calling it a national achievement that cannot be abandoned.

His remarks followed recent statements by Witkoff, who argued that Iran must completely dismantle its nuclear program, including key facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.

Additionally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other top officials have suggested that Iran should rely on imported enriched uranium instead of producing its own.
