Iran’s Embassy in the Vatican congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election, expressing hope for interfaith dialogue, peace, and justice. Cardinal Robert Prevost, originally from Chicago, became the first American Pope, succeeding Pope Francis.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Vatican has extended its congratulations on the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new Pope and leader of the Catholic Church worldwide.

In a message shared on its X account, the Iranian Embassy expressed its best wishes to the followers of the Catholic faith, hoping that Pope Leo XIV’s leadership will foster interfaith dialogue, peace, social justice, and the eradication of oppression and tyranny.

On May 7, cardinals gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica for the Mass 'Pro eligendo Romano Pontifice', marking the beginning of the Conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor.

On May 8, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the first American Pope, choosing the name Pope Leo XIV. The 69-year-old appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, greeting the faithful with the words: "Peace be with all of you!".
