AhlulBayt News Agency: The Grand Imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar has welcomed the ceasefire agreement announced between India and Pakistan, following rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, described the ceasefire as a significant step toward peace, security, and stability in South Asia and globally.
“Peace remains the optimal choice for governing relations between nations and peoples. International efforts must be intensified to end conflicts, wars, and hostilities, so humanity can enjoy a safer and more prosperous world,” he stated.
On Saturday, the Egyptian government also officially welcomed the ceasefire agreement.
India and Pakistan agreed to cease hostilities on Saturday following four days of intense fighting—the most severe in decades—which had threatened to escalate into full-scale war.
The Indian foreign secretary announced that both nations had agreed to halt fighting, effective at 5 PM (1130 GMT) Sunday, following discussions between their military chiefs.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, later confirmed the agreement on X, writing, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.”
Reports indicate that several civilians were killed and many others injured in cross-border exchanges. India’s response followed a massacre last month in Indian-administered Kashmir, where 26 people, mostly Indian tourists, were killed.
